Medication
Psychiatrists can prescribe psychostimulant medication under the NSW class authority when its conditions are met.
Cost, timing and follow-up
Initial assessment pathways commonly cost $1,000 or more, with waits of six months or longer. Ask what the fee includes and whether ongoing appointments are available. [7] [1]
Psychologist assessment
What it can include
Psychological assessment, with therapy or practical strategies where offered.
Medication
Psychologists cannot prescribe medication. Medication assessment and prescribing require a separate medical practitioner.
Cost, timing and follow-up
A full assessment often runs across four to six sessions and can cost thousands of dollars. Ask whether the report will meet the needs of any doctor involved in later medical care. [7] [1]
Emerging NSW GP assessment services
What it can include
Selected trained GPs are expected to begin NSW-funded assessment and treatment services from early 2027.
Medication
Endorsed GP prescribers will have a broader role than GPs authorised only to continue medication for someone already diagnosed and stable.
Cost, timing and follow-up
This is not yet a general statewide assessment pathway. NSW says access will be through participating practices and prioritised. [8]
Public mental health service
What it can include
Free hospital and community mental health services. The NSW Mental Health Line can complete a brief assessment and recommend a service when public mental health care may be appropriate.
Medication
Triage can recommend relevant care, but it does not advertise a bookable adult ADHD diagnosis or medication pathway.
Cost, timing and follow-up
This can be a useful starting point for broader or urgent mental health concerns. Do not assume it is a direct ADHD assessment appointment. [9]
ADHD coaches
What it can include
Practical support with routines, planning, follow-through and environmental or behavioural strategies.
Medication
Coaching does not include medical assessment or prescribing. It can sit alongside clinical care.
Cost, timing and follow-up
Fees, session length and packages vary. Check credentials, privacy, scope and how coaching will fit with your clinical care. [10]

    Create your profile and complete the assessment forms from home. Examples from school, work, relationships and day-to-day life are more useful than trying to find the right clinical words.

    See your GP for the referral and checks

    Ask a GP near you for the referral, an ECG, standard blood tests and recent blood pressure, pulse and weight measurements. These checks can be completed locally anywhere in NSW.

    Meet your ADHD Doctor

    Once your information is uploaded, book your first video appointment. No trip to a Sydney clinic is required. Your assessment takes place over several appointments, giving your doctor time to understand the full picture.

    Discuss the outcome and next step

    Your ADHD Doctor will explain the outcome and their reasoning. If ADHD is diagnosed, you will agree on a care plan based on your health, preferences and circumstances.

NSW requires prior authorisation before a clinician prescribes or supplies Schedule 8 psychostimulant medication. The pathway depends on who is prescribing and whether medication is being started or continued. [1] [2]

    Assessment comes first

    A diagnosis and a medication decision are separate parts of care. NSW Health currently lists paediatricians, psychiatrists and psychologists as professionals who can diagnose ADHD. Different authority rules apply if Schedule 8 psychostimulant medication is prescribed. [3] [1]

    Starting medication

    Psychiatrists, paediatricians and neurologists can use the NSW class authority to prescribe psychostimulant medication for ADHD when its conditions are met. Other prescribers need the relevant NSW approval. [1]

    Continuing with an authorised GP

    Since 1 September 2025, trained GPs with a NSW general authority can continue psychostimulant medication for someone aged six or older who was previously diagnosed and is stable on their medication. Conditions apply. [2]

    Psychostimulants used for ADHD are monitored medicines in SafeScript NSW. Prescribers and pharmacists can use the system to review prescribing and dispensing history and support safer decisions. [4] [5]
