Is an online ADHD assessment valid in Australia?

Yes. A telehealth assessment with an AHPRA-registered clinician is a legitimate clinical assessment. Your ADHD Doctor uses a structured clinical approach, covering your symptoms, history and daily life in detail.

Can a GP diagnose ADHD in Australia?

In some states, yes. States including New South Wales and Queensland now let specially trained GPs take a bigger role in diagnosing ADHD and prescribing medication, and other states are moving in the same direction. The rules differ from state to state, so check your state page above for the current local pathway.

What happens after my assessment?

If you're diagnosed with ADHD, your ADHD Doctor works with you on a treatment plan built around your needs. That can include medication, a follow-up appointment about two weeks after your assessment, and ongoing reviews. Your subscription covers up to six standard appointments each year.

Who do I nominate as my GP?

Your regular GP, or a GP clinic you've visited in person before. We work with your GP as your primary care provider, starting with requesting a health summary after your initial appointment. They can also arrange the ECG and blood tests you'll need before treatment starts. If you don't have a regular GP, please find one.

Can I transfer to Kantoko from another ADHD clinic?

Yes. If you've already been assessed elsewhere and want ongoing care, you can transfer to Kantoko. You don't need a new referral. Nominate a GP or clinic you've visited before when you sign up, and we'll ask them for a health summary after your first appointment. You'll still need recent ECG and blood test results before treatment continues, so we can pick up your care safely.

Is Kantoko covered by Medicare?

You need a valid Medicare card to join, but Medicare does not currently cover Kantoko's platform fees. Your GP visits and any routine tests may attract the usual Medicare rebates.

Attend your assessment by video. Your first appointment takes about 45 minutes, and most assessments take 2 to 4 sessions. If ADHD is diagnosed, treatment can start once your ECG and blood test results are in.

A Kantoko ADHD Doctor. Our care team includes psychiatrists, psychiatry registrars working under psychiatrist supervision, and GPs with a special interest in ADHD. Your history is shared across the team, so your care continues whoever you see.

How much does an ADHD assessment cost?

Kantoko costs $200 for your first month, then $100 per month on a 12-month subscription. That covers the assessment process and ongoing care, including up to six standard appointments each year. Medication, GP visits and routine tests are separate.

Traditional private assessments often cost more than $1000 upfront, with each follow-up billed separately. A subscription spreads the cost and keeps support in place after diagnosis.

How long does an ADHD assessment take?

Most Kantoko assessments take 2 to 4 telehealth sessions, with the first appointment running about 45 minutes. How quickly you can start depends on your state; current availability is listed below.

Traditional pathways can involve waits of six months or more for a first appointment, depending on where you live. The 2023 Senate inquiry into ADHD heard that long waits and high costs are the most common barriers to assessment in Australia.

Do you need a GP referral?

No, a referral is not needed. You nominate your regular GP when you sign up, and we ask them for a health summary after your first appointment. We work with your GP to provide regular updates on your care.
