Assessment, diagnosis and prescribing are separate decisions. Here is the SA context that can affect what happens after an assessment.
Under the current South Australian pathway, adults seeking diagnosis or ongoing stimulant treatment are referred for adult psychiatrist assessment and oversight. A GP can provide shared care and apply to the Drugs of Dependence Unit for section 18A authority. Authority is required when Schedule 8 treatment exceeds two months. A separate trained-GP diagnosis pathway is planned from February 2027. [1] [2] [3]
An ADHD diagnosis does not automatically lead to medication. Your doctor considers your health, preferences, possible benefits and risks before recommending a care plan. [5]
Current SA guidance directs adults seeking diagnosis or ongoing stimulant management to an adult psychiatrist for assessment and overarching care. A GP may then participate in shared care. [2]
A prescriber must hold section 18A authority when Schedule 8 treatment has exceeded two months. GP applications are reviewed by the Drugs of Dependence Unit and usually include a specialist report. [1]
Prescribers check ScriptCheckSA for prescribing and dispensing data. The system supports safer decisions and records authorities, but it does not decide which medicine is right for a person. [1] [4]

South Australia has announced training for up to 100 GPs to diagnose, treat and prescribe for ADHD from February 2027. This should not be read as meaning every local GP can already provide assessment. [3]

Kantoko costs $200 for the first month, then $100 per month. The subscription has a 12-month minimum term because it is designed to cover assessment and care that continues afterwards.

Kantoko's monthly platform fee is not eligible for a Medicare rebate, although you need a valid Medicare card to join. Your GP's usual fees and any Medicare rebates may apply to the referral appointment and routine tests.
The assessment takes place over several appointments. The exact number depends on your history, the information available and the clinical questions your ADHD Doctor needs to work through. It is different from the availability estimate, which tells you when appointments may be available, not when an assessment will be complete.
The fee includes the initial assessment process, up to six standard appointments each year, prescription and travel-letter requests, records, care tools and ongoing care-team support. Additional, extended or missed appointments can have a separate fee. See everything included.
The latest published estimate for new SA patients is in 1-2 weeks. This is an estimate rather than a guaranteed date; the appointments you can choose from depend on when your required information is ready and current clinician capacity.
A GP can provide shared care after specialist assessment and apply for section 18A authority for longer-term Schedule 8 stimulant prescribing. This does not mean every GP accepts ADHD shared care. Ask your GP before assessment and confirm who will provide specialist oversight.
Not as a general statewide pathway. The South Australian Government has announced that up to 100 trained GPs will diagnose, treat and prescribe for ADHD from February 2027. Participating GPs and access arrangements still need to be confirmed, so current announcements do not mean any local GP already offers this service.
It is the South Australian authority used for longer-term Schedule 8 prescribing. The GP shared-care flowchart says a prescriber needs this authority once treatment exceeds two months. The Drugs of Dependence Unit reviews applications, and GP applications generally include a specialist report.
