How Kantoko works in Tasmania

Online assessment. Local checks and prescribing coordination.

Kantoko keeps your assessment, appointments and records together. Your GP and local providers complete routine checks, and a Tasmanian prescriber may need to join the medication pathway.

Most of your care

Kantoko keeps your care together

Your ADHD Doctor and care team use the same platform throughout assessment and, when suitable, ongoing care.

  • Assessment and video appointments
  • Results, records and care plans
  • Requests and care-team communication
  • Ongoing appointments based on clinical need

Close to home

Some parts need a local provider

Tasmania requires the authorised stimulant prescriber to be physically present and practising in the state.

  • A referral from your GP
  • An ECG and standard blood tests
  • Blood pressure, pulse and weight
  • A Tasmanian prescriber if section 59E authority is needed

If stimulant medication is clinically appropriate, your care team will explain whether a Tasmanian GP needs to join the authority pathway. Medication is not guaranteed and is only one possible part of care.

The assessment process

What happens, in order

Complete your forms and local health checks before booking, so appointment time can focus on your history, what has been difficult day to day and what you want help with.

See what to ask your GP for
  1. 1

Start online, at your own pace

Create your profile and complete the assessment forms from home. Examples from school, work, relationships and day-to-day life are more useful than trying to find the right clinical words.

  2. 2

See your GP for the referral and checks

Ask a GP near you for the referral, an ECG, standard blood tests and recent blood pressure, pulse and weight measurements. These checks can be completed locally anywhere in TAS.

  3. 3

    Meet your ADHD Doctor

Once your information is uploaded, book your first video appointment. No trip to a Hobart clinic is required. Your assessment takes place over several appointments, giving your doctor time to understand the full picture.

  4. 4

Discuss the outcome and next step

Your ADHD Doctor will explain the outcome and their reasoning. If ADHD is diagnosed, you will agree on a care plan based on your health, preferences and circumstances.

TAS-specific information

What the TAS rules mean for your care

Assessment, diagnosis and prescribing are separate decisions. Here is the TAS context that can affect what happens after an assessment.

Short version

Your care team handles any TAS prescribing authority pathway needed if medication is clinically appropriate. You don't apply for it yourself. [1]

See the prescribing pathway step by step

A doctor needs section 59E authority before prescribing a Schedule 8 stimulant in Tasmania. The authorised doctor must be physically present and practising in the state. A Tasmanian GP can apply after assessment by a relevant specialist. An interstate specialist can support the application but cannot hold the Tasmanian authority. You do not apply for the authority yourself. [1]

  1. 1

Assessment and prescribing are separate decisions

An ADHD diagnosis does not automatically lead to medication. Your doctor considers your health, preferences, possible benefits and risks before recommending a care plan. [5]

  2. 2

Section 59E authority comes before prescribing

A doctor must obtain authority from the Tasmanian Department of Health before issuing a Schedule 8 stimulant prescription. [1] [2]

  3. 3

The authorised prescriber must practise in Tasmania

An interstate telehealth practitioner cannot personally hold section 59E authority. A relevant specialist can still assess the patient and provide a report supporting a Tasmanian GP's application. [1]

  4. 4

    TasScript supports coordinated prescribing

TasScript records monitored-medicine history and section 59E authorities. It helps clinicians see when another prescriber already holds authority and make informed decisions. [3] [4]
