Dr James Heaney is a psychiatrist with a special interest in adult ADHD, addiction medicine, and the intersection between chronic pain and mental health. Drawing on extensive experience across general adult psychiatry, psychotherapy, and community-based care, James brings a calm, curious, and patient-centred approach to ADHD. He is particularly attuned to how co-occurring conditions shape each person's experience and presentation, and is committed to providing care that is thoughtful, evidence-based, and responsive to individual needs.

Dr Heaney joined Kantoko to support people navigating ADHD later in life — often after years of feeling misunderstood or misdiagnosed. He believes ADHD care should be accessible, and deeply human. Kantoko allows him to offer support that meets people where they are, especially adults juggling work, family, or education.

Originally from New Zealand and now based in Queensland, James has worked across both sides of the Tasman in public and private settings. These experiences shape his reflective, adaptable approach to care. Outside of work, he enjoys learning languages, bodysurfing, hiking and touch rugby.
